- February 11, 2012 4:00 pm One day PV workshop
We will be installing a PV (photovoltaic) system to run a few small lights at Irish seed savers cob house. This will be a 12volt, off-grid system running LED lighting. First we will explain what the various components of the system are and how the system will work. Then it's outside where we will be installing the PV panel, running cables, installing the lights, placing batteries in their enclosure and wiring them up, connecting the system up and switching on the lights.
Irish Seed Savers Capparoe Co Clare Map to Irish Seed Savers - March 24, 2012 4:00 pm Introduction to Building Your Own Wind Turbine
This is a taster of a build-your-own workshop - the goal is to give you a realistic look at the various parts of building a Hugh Piggot designed wind turbine. We will discuss the various parts of the project, the materials, tools and equipment needed as well as the other components of a wind energy system. You can try out some blade carving using hand tools to get a feel for the process. Some people are quite happy to undertake a turbine building project by themselves and this introduction will allow you to gauge the skills required and the likely time involved. We will also discuss the various turbine sizes and the other components required to get yourself up and running.

This course is designed for a broad audience. It is a practical, hands-on course where the participants will learn to build a wind turbine from start to finish, participating in every stage of the process. The course should appeal to those with an interest in learning more about renewable energy, specifically wind energy and how to provide energy for the home or farm. Ideal for people from the farming sector, general public or professional trades people who wish to learn first-hand from people who have been involved with renewable energy for years. The machine we will build is based on Hugh Piggots design. Please note that only one turbine is built as part of the course and remains on site.

This workshop is aimed at giving you as much information as possible about Living Off Grid in Ireland – that is living with electricity produced by your own system and no electrical bill to worry about. We'll be discussing and demystifying batteries, battery housing, cables, inverters and charge controllers, and helping you to analyse how much power you may need and how to achieve that with wind, hydro or pv. Advantages of going off-grid will be debated such as keeping your carbon footprint low, keeping your energy budget low, independence etc. Also how you can go about doing most, if not all, of the work yourself safely and economically. We will also look at a small off-grid renewable system at Seed Savers.
